Botox vs Xeomin: What’s the Difference Between These Wrinkle Fighters?

The pursuit of youthful, smooth skin is a journey that many of us embark on as we age. Thanks to advancements in cosmetic dermatology, there are several non-surgical treatments available to help us maintain our youthful appearance!

Botox vs Xeomin at Defiage Med Spa in Houston are both popular choices in saying farewell to the appearance of frown lines and other wrinkles and achieving anti-aging cosmetic goals.

In our need-to-know guide, we’ll delve into the differences between these two wrinkle-reducing treatments to help you make an informed decision about which one may be right for you!

How Do Botox vs Xeomin Work?

Botox Cosmetic produced by Allergan and Xeomin by Merz Pharmaceuticals are both neurotoxin-based injectable treatments that are used to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and facial creases – without any recovery time. They work by blocking nerve signals in the muscles at the injection site, which relaxes the muscles and softens the wrinkles caused by muscle contractions.

Both cosmetic treatments relax overactive facial muscles and help smooth facial wrinkles. It’s important to note these injectable neurotoxins are only effective on dynamic facial lines, and static, severe lines will require other anti-aging treatment options such as dermal filler.

The two treatments are used for a variety of health and cosmetic purposes:

  • Frown lines
  • Glabellar lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Other dynamic wrinkles such as bunny lines
  • Excessive sweating
  • Overactive jaw muscles (TMJ)
  • Facial slimming of the jaw muscles
  • Muscle spasms
  • Uneven eyebrows

While they share a similar goal, there are a few major differences between the two treatments – let’s get into it.

Active Ingredients

One of the primary distinctions between the two muscle relaxants is their active ingredients. Botox is made from botulinum toxin type A, while Xeomin is derived from another type of botulinum toxin, incobotulinumtoxin A. The key difference between these formulations is that the latter does not have accessory proteins found in Botox, making it a “naked” neurotoxin.

This distinction can influence how the body processes the neurotoxin and may have implications for some patients.

Antibody Resistance

Some patients may develop antibodies, while harmless, that interfere with the action of Botox. Xeomin’s lack of accessory proteins may make it less likely for a patient to become resistant to treatment, as there are fewer proteins in this formulation for antibodies to target.

Results & Longevity

In terms of efficacy, both muscle relaxers offer similar results. Both cosmetic injectables are effective options in reducing moderate wrinkles and typically last for about 3-4 months – however, many patients report Xeomin lasts from 3-6 months.

Individual experiences may vary, but most report a significant reduction in the appearance of lines and wrinkles following treatment with either product.

Onset of Action

Another area where they differ is the onset of action. Botox often begins to take effect within a few days of treatment, while Xeomin may take effect in just a day, with results becoming more noticeable within a week. If you’re looking for quick results, Xeomin may be your preferred choice. However, if you’re willing to wait a bit longer for the effects to set in, Botox is a viable option as well.

Side Effects

Side effects for both treatments are generally mild and temporary. Common side effects may include redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site.

In rare cases, clients may experience headaches, drooping eyelids, or muscle weakness, but these side effects are typically short-lived and can be managed with proper care.

Which Is Right for Me?

The decision of which injectable to opt for depends on several factors, including your personal preferences and your aesthetic goals.

If you’ve been receiving Botox injections and are enjoying your results, there’s no reason to switch treatments. However, if you’ve found a reduction in effect, then another botulinum toxin injection without protein additives such as Xeomin may be a more effective treatment.

As with any medical treatment, the best way to decide which treatment is right for you is to discuss your options with our experienced providers.
